What Scottsdale Homeowners Say About Our Work

Unique Services CO

Our Outdoor & Exterior Tile Installation Services

Most calls we get fall into a handful of spaces. Here’s what each one needs and how we approach it.

Patios & Courtyards

Your patio is where Scottsdale living happens. We tile it in porcelain or stone that won't fade under UV, stays comfortable underfoot, and drains cleanly when the monsoons roll in. Covered or open, we match the tile to how much sun the space actually takes.

Pool Decks

A pool deck has the hardest job of any surface on your property. Standing water, chlorine, sunscreen, and bare feet all day. We use slip-rated tile (DCOF 0.42 or higher) and cooler materials like travertine so nobody's hopping across hot tile in July.

Walkways, Steps & Entryways

These are safety-first surfaces. Uneven joints and slick tile cause falls. We set walkways and outdoor steps level, with grippy, textured tile that handles foot traffic and still lifts your curb appeal.

Outdoor Kitchens & Balconies

Cooking areas need heat-safe tile for counters and backsplashes. Balconies and rooftop decks often call for pedestal-set porcelain pavers, which float above the surface and let water drain underneath. Both are specialty jobs we handle regularly.

The Right Tile for Arizona's Outdoors

Not every tile belongs outside. We help you pick one built for the desert. One that grips when wet, shrugs off UV, and won’t fade or crack. Here’s what we use most.

Porcelain Pavers

The top pick for Scottsdale patios and pool decks. Outdoor porcelain soaks up almost no water (under 0.5%), so it handles heat and the rare freeze without cracking. It comes in stone-look, wood-look, and concrete-look, and the thick 20mm pavers can even be set on pedestals. We look for a DCOF slip rating of 0.42 or higher and a PEI 4 or 5 for grip and toughness.

Travertine

A Scottsdale favorite around pools. Natural travertine stays cool underfoot and gives that high-end resort look you see all over Paradise Valley and Arcadia. It does need sealing to keep it protected, and we handle that.

Natural Stone & Slate

Slate, granite, and other stone bring rich color and a naturally textured, slip-resistant surface. Great for walkways and accents. Stone needs a good sealer out here, and we set it to last.

Ceramic & Mosaic Accents

Ceramic works for covered, low-traffic spots and shaded patios. Glass and mosaic tile make great borders, pool waterlines, and decorative touches that set your space apart.

Not sure which tile fits your space? We'll help you choose — no pressure, no cost.

How We Install Outdoor Tile

A patio that lasts comes down to prep. Here’s how every job goes:
Step 1

We come look and quote it

We check your existing slab, the slope, drainage, and layout, then hand you an itemized written quote.

Step 2

Prep the surface

We clean and level the concrete, fix cracks, and confirm the slope sheds water away from your home. New concrete gets time to cure first.

Step 3

Add crack isolation

We install an uncoupling or anti-fracture membrane so shifting soil and slab cracks don't telegraph up into your new tile.

Step 4

Set the tile

We use exterior-grade modified thin-set mortar with full coverage and back-buttering on large pavers. No hollow spots, no lippage.

Step 5

Build in expansion joints

Outdoor tile expands and contracts with the heat. We place expansion joints so it has room to move without cracking.

Step 6

Grout and seal

We finish with weather-tough grout and a UV-stable sealer that stands up to sun, rain, and pool chemicals.

Step 7

Walk it with you

We check the finished surface with you, confirm the drainage flow, and clean up the site.

Outdoor Tile Installation Cost in Scottsdale

Price depends on the space, the tile you choose, and the shape your existing surface is in. Pool decks and elevated decks cost more than a simple covered patio because the work is more involved. Here’s where installed prices usually land around Scottsdale:

Common Questions About Outdoor Tile

Most outdoor tile projects here run $14 to $25 per square foot installed. A covered porcelain patio is at the low end; pool decks and natural stone run higher. Tear-out and new concrete are extra. For an exact number, call (480) 608-4343 for a free itemized quote.
Outdoor-rated porcelain wins for most patios. It absorbs almost no water, takes the heat, and won't fade under UV. Choose a slip rating (DCOF) of 0.42 or higher and a lighter color that stays cooler underfoot. For pool decks, travertine is a top pick because it stays cool and looks high-end.
In most cases, yes — if the slab is solid and slopes to drain. We add an uncoupling membrane so any cracks below don't reach your new tile. If the concrete is badly cracked or holds water, we'll be upfront that it needs fixing first.
Dark surfaces soak up sunlight, and in a Scottsdale summer they can climb past 160°F — too hot for bare feet. Lighter porcelain and cool-underfoot travertine solve it. Material and color choice make a real difference outdoors.
A typical patio takes about 3 to 6 days from prep to sealing. Pool decks and larger or elevated jobs run longer. We also plan around extreme heat and monsoon rain so the install cures properly.
